3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Itinerary
Marrakech → Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley
Departure at 7:30 AM from your riad or hotel. The first hour takes you into the High Atlas Mountains on the road to Tizi n'Tichka Pass — Morocco's highest paved road at 2,260 meters. Berber villages, snow-capped peaks, and dramatic valley views line every kilometer.
First stop: Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. Walk through the ancient clay fortress before the crowds arrive. Then through Ouarzazate — Morocco's film capital — and east along the Road of 1,000 Kasbahs through the Valley of Roses to Dades Valley for the night.
🍽️ Dinner and breakfast included
Dades Gorge → Todra Gorge → Erfoud → Merzouga Desert Camp
After breakfast, a short morning drive into Dades Gorge — a narrow canyon of red and ochre limestone that opens dramatically as you climb. Then east to Todra Gorge, where walls rise 300 meters straight up from a cold river on the canyon floor. One of Morocco's most spectacular short walks.
Through the Ziz Valley palm oasis and the fossil town of Erfoud, you arrive in Merzouga by late afternoon. Your camel is waiting. A one-hour sunset camel trek takes you deep into Erg Chebbi as the dunes turn gold, then copper, then dark crimson. Dinner at camp is traditional Moroccan — harira, tagine, fresh bread, mint tea. Berber music around the campfire. A sky with zero light pollution — perfect for desert photography enthusiasts.
🍽️ Dinner and breakfast included
Sahara Sunrise → Rissani → Ouarzazate → Marrakech
Wake before dawn for sunrise from the dunes. No photograph captures it — you have to be there. Breakfast at camp, then the return journey through Rissani (ancient caravan town, authentic souk), lunch stop, and back over the Atlas via Ouarzazate and Tizi n'Tichka.
Arrival in Marrakech: 7:00–8:00 PM.

Avoid
June, July, August — avoid. Daytime temperatures in Erg Chebbi regularly hit 45°C+. Even nights stay above 30°C. Not a comfortable desert experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What time does the tour depart and return? +
Departure at 7:30 AM from your Marrakech riad on Day 1. Return to Marrakech on Day 3 between 7:00–8:00 PM depending on traffic.
Will I make the sunset camel ride on Day 2? +
Yes — the Day 2 itinerary is specifically timed to arrive in Merzouga with enough daylight for the camel trek. We have been running this route for years and know exactly how long each stop takes.
Is there a shower at the desert camp? +
Standard camp: no shower at the dunes, but you shower at the Merzouga hotel on Day 3 morning. Luxury camp: hot shower inside your private ensuite tent.
Can I bring a large suitcase? +
Your large luggage stays securely in the vehicle throughout. Bring a small backpack with desert essentials for the camp night — camels cannot carry large bags.
Can this tour be extended to 4 days? +
Yes — and we recommend it if your schedule allows. A 4th day gives you a full day in the Sahara and reduces the Day 3 return drive significantly. See our 4-day Chegaga desert tour for an even deeper Sahara experience, or ask us for the 4-day Merzouga itinerary when you request your quote.
Is this tour suitable for children? +
Yes, from age 6 upward. Children love the camel ride, campfire night, and sandboarding. We adapt the pace for families. Browse our complete range of Morocco family-friendly desert tours for more options.
